STEP-UNCLE WITH SEX OFFENDER HISTORY CHARGED AFTER 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL RAPED AND KILLED IN ILLINOIS RV

Vandalia, Illinois – A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by her step-uncle, a registered sex offender who had been entrusted with her care despite his criminal history, authorities said Monday. Fayette County Sheriff’s officials identified the victim as Kylie Toberman of Vandalia. Her body was discovered Friday afternoon inside a recreational vehicle parked on the rural property where she had been staying. Investigators say the teenager was last seen alive around 9 p.m. Thursday wearing a red sweatshirt and black leggings. Family members reported her missing at approximately 6:30 a.m. Friday, triggering an hours-long search involving multiple agencies. Kylie’s body was located shortly after 2:20 p.m. that same day. The exact cause of death remains under investigation pending autopsy results, but authorities confirmed the case is being treated as a homicide with sexual assault. The suspect, identified by sources as the girl’s step-uncle, was already a convicted sex offender at the time he was left responsible for her care, according to law enforcement records. He has been taken into custody and charges are pending, the sheriff’s office said. “This is an unimaginable tragedy for this family and our community,” Fayette County Sheriff Dan Bruzzi said in a statement. “Detectives are working around the clock to ensure justice for Kylie.” No further details about the circumstances that led to the teenager being placed in the suspect’s care have been released. The investigation remains active.
